A can of worms, or a closer look at UT's 1909 season

Earlier I posted about UT's 1909 series against Kentucky.  Doing a bit more research on that seems to have opened a can of worms.  Missing games. You know, things like that.  Rather than postpone the inevitable, here's what I've found about that season.

Let's look at UT's schedule, according to the yearbook.

1909 Volunteer

And then the compiled results.

2014 University of Tennessee Record Book

Wait, where did the games against Chattanooga end up?  The easiest way to do this is to go at them one by one.

March 27 Cincinnati National, at Knoxville - This would be the Cincinnati Reds, the professional team.  It should be labelled as an exhibition match and not count as a loss.

The Sunday Herald (Boston, MA) - March 28, 1909

Springfield Republican (MA) - March 28, 1909

So, not only did UT lose, they lost to the Reds' second team.  The Cincy pitchers would be Ralph Savidge, who only appeared in one Reds' game in 1909 and left that after four innings with a 22.50 ERA, and Bob Ewing, who went 11-12 for the Reds that season.

To add confusion, the Sporting Life reports the game as being against Cincinnati U.

Sporting Life - April 10, 1909
LA84.org

UT's The Orange and White gives much more detail about the game. The Orange and White was a student newspaper that began in 1906.

The Orange and White - April 9, 1909

Ah, but in the box score we find a discrepancy from the blurb in The Sunday Herald.  The Rowan that appears in the box score was Jack Rowan, who also went 11-12 that season with the Reds.

April 1-3 Tusculum, at Knoxville - I was having difficulty find any supporting material for the games against Tusculum.  I asked Dom Donnelly, the Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations at Tusculum College, for some assistance, but he didn't have info from that era.  I then turned to the libraries at Tusculum College.  Kathy Cuff responded saying, "We don’t have any newspaper clippings, press releases, sports reports, etc on the 1909 baseball team and the results of the 1908-09 year.  But I did find this in the May 1909 Orange and Black :"
“From the standpoint of winning games, Tusculum has not been very successful this season, but she is due more credit than has been given her.  In the first place, we have endeavored to play clean college ball, and with the exception of two games, no one but bona-fide students have played and they have met with the requirements of the Athletic Association and Faculty.  In the second place, he have played the best college teams in the country and the majority of them have rank professionals on their teams – men who are at school for no other purpose than to play ball.”

The Orange and White - April 9, 1909
Matching up the scores from the paper to the scores in the Record Book, there's one correction that needs to be made.  The second game's score should be 22-1, not 22-0 as reported in the Record Book.

April 9-10 Emory & Henry, at Knoxville - Two newspapers are only reporting the game on the 10th.  I could not find any report in the April 10th edition of The Boston Herald for the game on the 9th.

School newspapers to the rescue again.  The scores match.

The Orange and White - April 19, 1909

April 12-13 University of Michigan, at Knoxville - The dates and scores match.

Sporting Life - April 24, 1909
LA84.org

April 15-17 Dahlonega, at Knoxville -the scores match, but the third game went 10 innings.

Charleston News and Courier - April 16, 1909

The Orange and White - April 23, 1909
Well, these game scores match up with the Record Book.  The new bit of info is that the third game went 10 innings.

April 23-24 Sewanee, at Knoxville
- the scores match.

Sporting Life - May 8, 1909
LA84.org

The Orange and White - May 7, 1909

Because one doesn't see that many photos of the teams from that era, I include one of William G. Baker, Captain of the team.  He played Right Field. He also played fullback for the varsity football team.

The Orange and White - May 7, 1909

As I was researching this post I found that there's too much information for a single season.  I'll stop here at the beginning of May 1909 and pick the remainder of the season up next post.

UT's 1911 season brings a new coach

According to the University of Tennessee's Baseball Record Book the coach of the 1911 team was Z. G. Clevenger.
2014 University of Tennessee Record Book
There's even a nice narrative about him.

2014 University of Tennessee Record Book - page 98

But it isn't quite true.  Zora G. Clevenger came to UT from Nebraska Wesleyan University.   But he arrived in Knoxville after the 1911 baseball season.  I spoke with Alex Linden, Sports Information Director at Nebraska Wesleyan University, who confirmed that Clevenger was coaching the baseball team in Lincoln, Nebraska, during the 1911 season.

So, if not Clevenger, who was coaching the Volunteers?  It appears that it was Andrew Alexis Stone.

1911 Volunteer

So, the 1911 season results in the Record Book should look something like this:

Please note, this new info has not been verified or approved by the University of Tennessee, hence the overlay.

But, since I'm playing "let's rewrite the record book",  here's what Clevenger's new mini coaching bio would look like:

In addition to updating his stats I've used a more contemporary picture that I found at Wikipedia.org. They picked it up from the National Football Foundation website.

This post focuses on the coach of the 1911 team, not the games played.  But setting up for a future post, UT's first game was against Mooney.  That would be Mooney School.  Or Mooney's School.  We now call it Battle Ground Academy, based in Franklin, Tennessee.  It was a college prep school.  A high school.  Yes, it was an opponent, but should high school games be included in the official records?

UT played Murphy College in 1908 and 1916.  In a post about the 1908 games I wrote:
...they [UT] should footnote the wins as being against a High School.
I supported it then and support it now.

Prince Henry

The Advance-News - January 6, 1937

Henry Kawaihoa Oana, also known as Prince Oana, played ball in Knoxville for a partial season (1937) before going to Little Rock, also of the Southern Association.  He eventually made it to the Majors in 1943 and 1945, pitching for the Detroit Tigers.

UT's 1910 series against Kentucky

Moving on to the University of Tennessee's 1910 series against the University of Kentucky I run into issues right at the start. According to the results of the season, UT played Kentucky State six times over two weekends.  That isn't typical scheduling.

2014 UT Record Book
The UT yearbook starts to sort out some of the confusion.  We learned from the last post that KSU became UK.

1910 Volunteer

Central of Kentucky became Eastern Kentucky, but I don't see any mention of the 1910 season games.
2014 UT Record Book

Let's look at the 1910 UK schedule and results to verify schools and dates.

2014 UK Baseball Media Guide

The 1911 UK yearbook supports the scores and dates in their media guide.

1911 The Kentuckian

Well, the dates and score match up between UT and UK baseball media guides.  What do the newspapers of the day say?

Dallas Morning News - April 23, 1910

Dallas Morning News - April 24, 1910
So the scores reported in the Dallas Morning News are:
  • April 22, 1910, at Knoxville - UT 5, KSU 4
  • April 23, 1910, at Knoxville - UT 5, KSU 1
  • April 23, 1910, at Knoxville - UT 4, KSU 6
Compared to the media guides, the W-L is correct, as are the scores of the final two games of the series.  The score of the first game does not match the media guides which list it as a UT win, 15-12.

Ah, wait.  Let me check another newspaper.

The Paducah Evening Sun - April 23, 1910
I guess the game score was 15-12.

Turning to Central of Kentucky and the games that next week.

Dallas Morning News - April 30, 1910

Beaumont Enterprise - May 1, 1910

Here the scores are:
  • April 29, 1910, at Knoxville - UT 5, Central 0
  • April 30, 1910 - UT 4, Central 3
  • April 30, 1910 - UT 9, Central 6
And in UT's Record Book:
  • April 29, 1910 - UT 5, Central 0
  • April 30, 1910 - UT 9, Central 6
  • April 30, 1910 - UT 4, Central 3

The UT Record Book has games 1 and 2 of the second day reversed, but the scores match up.  Eastern Kentucky University (formerly Central University of Kentucky) does not yet have this season listed in their media guide.

My opinion is that the first three games attributed to Kentucky State (4/22 and 4/23) should be placed under the University of Kentucky group, and the second three games attributed to Kentucky State (4/29 and 4/30) should be placed under the Eastern Kentucky group.
